There are five breeds native to Canada ; four being recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club and one no longer recognized by the CKC. The Canadian Kennel Club assures in sound breeding to protect and prosper quality foundation stock. Of these five breeds the Canadian Eskimo Dog is considered one of the rarest breeds in the world. The Eskimo Dog almost became extinct during the 1960's. The second breed ; the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is also considered a rare breed but is steadily becomming more popular. Thirdly, the Newfoundland is fairly well know throught the world as Canada's gentle giant. Next, the Labrador Retriever also originates from Canada but was further developed in Great Britain. Finally, The Tahltan Bear Dog is extinct. The last one died in 1931.
